Mercury Driveshaft Technology
Today’s Mercury vehicles have come a long way from the old, low-powered Mercurys of a decade or so ago. With new advancements in engine technology, most new Mercury vehicles produce tremendous amounts of horsepower! This advance in technology also translates to an extreme stress on the two-piece Mercury Driveshaft design, and failure is common.
Most rear-drive Mercury drive shaft consists of a two-piece shaft which has a center support, U joints and CV joint. Some Mercury models have a front driveshaft as well. The driveshaft comes originally with a staked-in U-joint which is not replaceable by regular means.
Mercury Driveshaft Problems
Diagnosing a Driveshaft problem is not simple. In most cases the problem can’t be duplicated when the vehicle is on a hoist, because there is no load on the wheels. The most common Mercury drive shaft problem is a vibration at speeds between 30-60 miles per hour. Noise from the center support bearing is also common. Taking your vehicle to a qualified Mercury technician to diagnose a driveshaft failure is always a good idea.
