BMW Driveshaft Technology

Today’s new BMW vehicles have come a long way from the old, low-powered BMWs of the 1970's. With new advancements in engine technology, most new BMW engines will put up between 240 to 560 horsepower. This advancement in technology also translate to an extreme amount of stress on the two-piece driveshaft design. On AWD models (X models), the one-piece front drive shaft also suffer the high power torque transferred to it, therefore driveshaft failure is common.

Most older rear BMW drivelines include a two or three U joints and a center support in the middle. From the early 1990's a single CV joint style driveshaft was introduced which also included a single or a double staked-in U-joint and a center support. The front drive shaft uses a U-joint design or a straight bar with no universal joints. A FLEX DISC is used on every late model BMW vehicle, so check the flex disc for cracks and replace it when changing your driveshaft. Our driveshafts are made to factory specification where zero clearance is necessary. All driveshafts come with the original staked-in U-Joint style.

BMW Driveshaft Problems

Diagnosing a driveshaft problem is not simple. In most cases, the problem can’t be duplicated when the vehicle is on a hoist, because there is no load on the wheels. The most common BMW drive shaft problem is a vibration at speeds between 20-60 miles per hour. Also, on early models vibration between the seats will be felt when taking off from a standstill. Noise from the center support bearing is also common. Taking your vehicle to a qualified BMW technician to diagnose a driveshaft failure is always a good idea.
