Honda Driveshaft Technology
HONDA vehicles no longer use strictly front wheel drive design in their vehicles. Today’s Honda trucks and SUVs use an all-wheel-drive drivetrain system, such as the one found in the Honda CRV. The use of a Driveshaft versus an Axle brings new stability and off road capabilities to the traditional FWD platform. Driveshafts of today’s vehicles work harder and under high stress due to powerful engines and transmission. Larger wheels cause more friction and more stress on the driveshaft, so failure is very common.
Most rear-drive Honda drive shaft consists of a two-piece shaft which has a center support and U joints. Some Honda models have a front driveshaft as well. The driveshaft comes originally with a staked-in U-joint which is not replaceable by regular means.
Honda Driveshaft Problems
Diagnosing a Driveshaft problem is not simple. In most cases the problem can’t be duplicated when the vehicle is on a hoist, because there is no load on the wheels. The most common Honda drive shaft problem is a vibration at speeds between 30-60 miles per hour. Noise from the center support bearing is also common. Taking your vehicle to a qualified technician to diagnose a driveshaft failure is always a good idea.
