Today’s Audi vehicles have come a long way from the old Type A of 1910. With new advancements in engine technology, most new Audi vehicles such as the R8 produce high amounts of horsepower! This advance in technology also translates to an extreme stress on the two-piece Driveshaft design, and failure is common.
All AWD Audi drive shaft consist of a two-piece shaft which has a center support, U joint and a CV joints. The driveshaft comes originally with a staked-in U-joint which is not replaceable by regular means.
Audi Driveshaft Common Problems
Diagnosing a driveshaft problem is not simple. In some cases the problem can’t be duplicated when the vehicle is on a hoist, because there is no load on the wheels but it is the best place to start with. The most common Audi drive shaft problem is a vibration at speeds between 30-60 miles per hour which is felt in between the seats. Noise from the center support bearing is also common which will sound as a high pitch sound. Taking your vehicle to a qualified Audi technician to diagnose a driveshaft failure is always a good idea.
